Fairing restoration/modifications...

Over the past 3 or 4 months I've filled in the holes for the snaps by the left fairing pocket, filled in the cigarette lighter hole, and made a new set of lids out of fiberglass...Before winterizing two of our other bikes and rearranging the garage to "winter mode", I shot the lids with a texture product and paint...I used SEM texture in an aerosol can and their satin trim paint...I was of course hoping for the best, but also apprehensive it would be what I wanted....

As you'll see in the pics. It turned out great!!!....

Those lids look great! Would you mind sharing the process that you used to create them?

Great work and thanks for the post. I have heavily modified a fairing to fit my VN1600 Vulcan, lots of ABS plastic work that needs a facotry looking finish. In the past I wiped the surface down with Aceton and then coated it with brush on pickup bed liner material to get a consistent surface. But your results look better so I'll try that for my project.

I have also made repairs and new parts using a composite buildup methpd. I use perforated aluminum sheet stock (easy to find at Home Depot/Lowes/ACE) which is easy to cut and shape to provide a form which can be layed in fibergkas. I cut and form the aluminum and then cover one side with masking tape, then apply fibreglass to the other side. Once that sets I take off the tape and apply fiberglas to the first side. It creates a slightly flexible but strong composite layup to which its easy to install a latch or lock system or hinge. I used this method to repair a fire damaged Hannigan fibreglas faring, and to form the pocket cover panels.
