Windjammer/GoldWing Facelift

And the after...

The garage door opener button is right next to my throttle, so my hand never leaves the grip

All the others are right up front and within easy access

Now that it is getting warmer, maybe I can start to shoot some paint, but I just added to my MBS condition with a 1987 GL1200 Interstate, so who knows what's going to get worked on now!

Well, this project is going on the back burner for a while. The '87 that I bought was going to be a donor motor for my '84. I paid $500 for it so I was expecting a turd. I got something a little better than that.

So, at this point, I think what I am going to do is take the '84 motor out of the '81 and put it in my '84. The WJ III is going to get finished and eventually go on the '84. This would mean I will need to get another trunk at some point, then that bike will have the full Vetter package.

Those 1200's are notorious for stators going bad around 50,000 miles. A company made kits to put a small GM automotive alternator driven from the crankshaft at the front of the engine. It was called "Poor Boy" kit. They no longer supply them due to the age of those 1200's now. If you can fabricate brackets and make a pulley you can copy the Poor Boy setup. I've found several 1200's for sale and found everyone of them had dead stators. The people selling them wanted too much for them considering they had dead stators. They all cringed when I pulled out a multimeter to check system voltage when it was running as they knew the stator was dead and was selling the bike for that reason. Below is a photo of a Poor Boy alternator setup on a 1200.

I am well versed in the problems of the 1200. My 81 1100 actually has a 1200 motor and my 84 is a 1200 Standard that I have changed the stator on it twice. You can still buy the poorboy kit new on ebay.
