Well I have an '80 air cooled inline four and have always taken the lowers off when it warms up,always thought it would help keep the engine cooler and me as the rider. So I asked on an XS site about that and it seemed that alot of the riders kept them on year round.I always wanted to do that for rain protection but thought the engine would really run hot but it doesn't seem to be a problem.
I think I might try and keep my lowers on in the summer months...if I lived in the desert where it got above 100..they would never be put on:-)
See what happens...anybody else leave them on year round?
Oh yeah while I am at it...I have noticed some riders have cut off parts of the lowers that cover the engine to the carbs...is this for style or to help cool the engine.Might be a few bikes that have to so they fit but I was just wondering.

I leave mine on 365, but... I also have a set a baker air wings that came with the bike. I guess someone made some brackets to mount them with the WJ and they work good enough for me. Over time the plexiglass wings broke so I made new ones out of thicker plexigalss and only have one bend in them. Now they direct "cooler" air onto me. They also make an excellent video camera mount. :D

It never really gets to cold here, maybe a low of 40 in some winter months. Now that I moved to the mountains it is a different story. They say it gets to zero, with snow and ice. All in all I do not have lowers but I want some. Problem is here it gets to be 100+ on a regular bases in the summer months. So probably not a good idea to run the lowers, especially on the XS.

I kept mine on this summer. I have a 15 mile commute to my summer job that parallels a river. The bugs are insane and prior to getting the Vetter with lowers, I would arrive at work with a nasty layer of smashed bugs on my legs. Haven't noticed any over heating issues.

Mine have been on my cb750 for the last 15 years. But it rarely gets to 100 here. I have never noticed any heat issues even when riding long distances in the summer months.
