New guy here located in Valparaiso IN. I remember the Vetter fairings from years back and decided to try to fit on onto my '02 Shadow VLX. I found a Windjammer III on Craigslist that I'm going to see tomorrow that needs work. I did find a post that someone else had installed one on their VLX as well so obviously it can be done, just what I needed, another project! Looking forward to this -

In my opinion the windjammer look very good on modern bikes.
When you do get it mounted post some pictures for us , we all like pictures!
You will likely have to build your own mount .
Did you get lowers with the lll ?

I'm the guy that put a Windjammer on my Honda VLX 600. A Windjammer will just barely fit. The only real problem you may run into is the fairing hitting the Air Filter housing on the right side. My Windjammer was a Kawasaki Fairing so it was already cut to fit on the Kawasaki KZ series of motorcycles so my Fairing just cleared the Air Filter housing because of that. You may end up needing to cut your Fairing and make the mount on the right side shorter than the left side to clear it. I know you'll think about switching to aftermarket filters, but don't do it. The stock Air Filter Housing is designed to pull heated air from between the cylinders and heads. This prevents ice formation in the carburetors. Carburetor icing can be a problem even when the temperatures are in the 60's. Gasoline is a very good refrigerant and creates a large temperature drop in the intake when it changes from a liquid to a vapour.
I ride year round including very cold winter conditions so keeping my original Air Filter Housing was a requirement.

None of the Vetter Lowers will work due to the foot forward controls on the VLX 600. Your knees will hit them. I made lowers to fit my setup. I welded a crash bar made of square, 11 gauge steel tubing and attached it to the bike. Then I plucked a couple of illegal coroplast signs from the side of the road and made lowers from them. I painted them black, trimmed them with black duct tape to cover the corrugated ends, and used tie straps to attach them to the crash bar. They are so cheap to make you can consider them disposable. Gravel and other road debris will cause pitting and that sort of thing so after a year or so you can simply make new lowers and toss the ratty looking old ones. After you mount it you'll notice a slight improvement in performance a little better gas mileage. That Fairing is Aerodynamic. You'll also find the windshield will be very short in relationship to the standard heights of the original windshields due to the low seat on the VLX 600.

Expect to get lots of attention and questions from other Bikers when they notice your Bike with it's Windjammer Fairing. Only old Bikers will know what it is. Expect younger Bikers wanting to know where you got it, how much it cost, and where they can get one. Also expect people wanting to know what model and make is as as they’ve never seen another Bike like it and assume it came from the Dealer that way.
