I've previously resisted chiming in with this ditty heard from my Father many times, but can't hold out any longer...
It's old enough to smoke.
:) I know, not very helpful...
Really like the looks of the one-year-only 1984 GL1200 standard. Anyone ever see one with a WJ5 on it? Was a mounting kit made for such an install? I have this "vision" of one...not that I even own a GL1200 standard. :)
I've appended another photo, this one showing my carb from the top (with the "tank" panel open and the air cleaner removed). With the tank/shroud, its hard to get any decent side view. The carb is a single barrel Holley, and my understanding based on an interweb search is these were built...
I do still have it...installed on the bike (have only had it since September, and its been stored all winter here in NJ). Started it up just the other day in fact, runs great. I've seen some heated debate about these single carb setups (mine is from now defunct Cycle Innovations), but I'm...
I mentioned this auction in another thread last week; unfortunately it sold a few days ago...

No vents in the shield as far as I can see, but may be a good deal for someone looking for the chrome trim. Probaly pretty hard to find in NOS condition...
Well, in another thread, I detailed finding my late Father's 1981 Goldwing last year, after an almost 25 year absence. I own his '47 Indian as well. Other than those two bikes, my Dad owned a number of bikes at various times as I was growing up. In approximate chronological order, they were...
Gonna have to disagree with you there; worn rings or rings that are not seated properly can and do lead to smoke / oil consumption. Not saying it is definitely the case here though.
As my Dad used to say "Its old enough to smoke". :)
But seriously folks - could it be a problem with rings seating properly when cold, then when everything heats up / expands, that goes away?
They've been salting the roads here in central NJ pretty good...even if we do get a nice day, I wouldn't dare take it out until the rains come and wash that off.. but good. Maybe March.
Well, it was only a matter of time (have had the bike back for about 4 months now). Last week, I ran into my Dad's old friend, who I had given the bike to back in 1990, and who had sold it shortly thereafter. Ran into him at a local deli. Due to the weather here in NJ, I didn't have the bike...
It looks exactly like the lighter on my circa 1981 WJ5. which is a vintage piece. I cannot swear it is an original Vetter part however, or if they even used a single style. I have seen very similar chrome lighter heads for sale on Ebay, for Yamaha fairings, etc.
It sure is a good thing they...
