Hello Everyone
Greetings from Alberta Canada
I acquired a 1978 KZ 1000 last winter with a the Windjammer four on it.
Not sure if I should ask here or on one of the forums.
The fairing trim is damaged and needs replacing. Any leads where to find that?
Also the windshield needs replacing.
Can a person get away with buying a piece of lexan or similar and cut one out myself?
Or should a person buy one made from Slipstreamer or similar. Because the lexan will be scratched up piece of junk, after a dozen cleanings?
As you can see I need a signal light as well!
Thanks

The original windscreen on those had some sort of hardened coating on them, Because of that, they are resistant to scratches, but incredibly difficult to polish. I tried to have a local glass shop make one years ago, but they couldn't get the curve right without it cracking. There are some companies that make new replacements, but they are not cheap. I got my last few on eBay. I see both new and used ones up there now. Hopefully you can find one in Canada to save on shipping.

As for the trim, the only trim that I have found that works right is the stuff sold by Vetter. Unfortunately, Craig and Carol shut down their online store not long after his accident. When last heard from Carol, she was talking about moving to an eBay store, and maybe one of their sons were going to run it, but I haven't seen it yet. They are both mostly retired.

I am fitting the same fairing to a z1. Can you post some close up pics of the frame mount?
I'll get some pics later today, and post them in the next day or so.
The fella that had the bike before Brazed/welded the bracket on the frame.
Famous last words ( " It ain't goin no where" )
They normally were clamped on with hose clamps or U bolts. At least that's what I remember when I had a windjammer on a KZ back in the 80's.

As for the windshield, I kinda figured as much. Just being a cheap b.....h, oops being frugal. I thought that some others may have tried it with some luck.
For the trim. I've been looking around on the web, with no luck.
I figured Craig probably would have out sourced from some where. But it may not be manufactured any more.
I did see some that might work, but it doesn't have the chrome strip.

Anybody have any luck with finding signal lights?
Or jimmy rigging something together!
With all the issues this fairing has, I might be better off to get one on ebay or from a wrecker.

I have salvaged worse Windjammers than yours. They are actually pretty easy to work on. The only source I know for turn signals is eBay. Those lenses are known to pop off with age, although I have never lost one. There is some debate about the best adhesive to reattach them. I've even seen pretty good results with sheet metal screws.

I did shoot a note off to Carol to see if they have an trim kits left. I will let you know should I hear back from her. I think that the trim was at one time a common trim on boats. You might want to try a marine supply place.

Thanks KGBnut
Even Carol's source for trim would be awesome!
I'll check out the boat trim outfits.

Hello Iboone
I hope these pics help a bit. The bracket is held in place on the bottom by hose clamps. The top looks like it should have U bolts holding it in place.
The friend I got the bike from, chose to weld it on instead.

In case this helps, there are a few close-up pics in here where I used two clamps for each mount foot:

It looks like the bottom of this bracket had to be cut and removed to mount properly is that correct?
That mount on my bike, yes. The mount was from an '82 Honda 750, and my bike is a '96 Nighthawk 750. The exhaust pipes sit at a different height relative to the frame, which is why I cut it.

You really should read through my thread about the installation. I posted these pics only to show how the hose-clamps attach the mount to the frame. As noted, some mounts use U-bolts.

I’m selling that same model, logistically might expensive, but all part you need.

That is really nice and complete...too nice to part out. Where are you located? Also, do you have a mounting bracket, and for which bike?

I don't need it (in fact, I have a spare), I just thought it would be good information for someone that might want it.
